The Intern

…and welcome back after a brief intermission.

Life continues to go well, up here. Moose are an everyday occurrence, and I am likely to stop mentioning them, barring some “incident” down the road.

Our family/tribe doubled in size this week as the interns arrived. They are younger, with less professional experience, but an enthusiastic group. I look forward to getting to know them and integrating them into our tribe. The first couple of days have been interesting to watch them learn reunites that were new to me a month ago. One person has never been camping before, I hope he’s ready to do it for 3 more months. For their first night, the owner prepared a cookout for all of us to enjoy. Last night he closed the zipline for all of us to go over an experience it.

An unexpected surprise, I had 2 days off this week. One the first day I visited an old gold mine and hiked around some of the peaks in the area.IN the higher elevations where I was (`3,000 ft) there is still about a foot of snow on the ground. Back at camp I am in a t-shirt a jeans. Everything has turned green, and plants are beginning to grow and flower. Today is my second day off and I will be taking the ATV tour of the area that we offer to guests. I will also be visiting our local post office, which is smaller than a master bedroom. Not only will I pick up stamps, but also some fresh eggs that the operator sells.

The eggs are the last ingredient I need to make some chocolate chip cookies for the group. They will be my latest venture back into cooking/baking. Last week I made some scones and bagels, this week I made sushi for the first time – spicy tuna rolls. Yes mom, I’m eating my vegetables, too. I’ve rediscovered that fresh spinach is a great filler for breakfast and dinner dishes, including my omelets, salads, and sandwiches.

Work continues to go well, and I have been checked off in all of my areas – yurt (front office), zipline, and barista. I look forward to diving into each of the areas more. I feel like I’ve been here longer than a month, as many daily tasks, now seem like old routines. Of course, I continue to make mistakes and learn. Last night one of the drains clogged in the coffee truck, causing the sinks to overflow and flood the floor. What a mess!
